A Day at the Beach

On our first vacation day in New Jersey it was very important to mom that we take Clara to the proverbial shore for her first beach experience. So off we went to catch some rays and look out across the water at New York City in the distance.

We hit little or no traffic on the drive down to Sandy Hook. The beaches weren't crowded and the weather was absolutely perfect. You couldn't have asked for a better day. Clara was into it immediately, scampering around and testing out the new environment.

It is always fun to watch something absolutely blow Clara's mind. I mean, at one year old how do you have any reference point for something with the enormity or majesty of the ocean? Or, for that matter, of old wrinkly Russian dudes in Speedos? She was completely entranced.

Clara also had a great time playing in the sand. Castles were made, holes were dug and Clara examined all sorts of nifty detritus, which of course she attempted to sample. We were forever pulling things out of her mouth. I will not be sad when that particular habit goes by the wayside.

We knew going in that she would taste stuff, despite our best efforts to the contrary, but we figured when it came to the sand, at least, it would be unpleasant enough that she wouldn't go back for more. WRONG-O. She shoveled in so much I half expected her to poop a pearl!

One of her favorite things was being buried. We dug a pit and she made it her play pen. Later we filled the whole and covered her up to her waist. Slick daddy then burrowed a hand in there and played a little "crabby" bites the apple, which KILLED I'm tellin' ya!

We stayed as long as we could, but with our afternoon train into New York looming we had to get back home. Reluctantly we piled in the car (after stripping down and hosing off little miss sandy bottom) for lunch and the trip home.

It was a great day and I'm already looking forward to Clara's next beach adventure.

How about Maui?

The National Aquarium

While the National Aquarium in Washington, DC can't hold a candle to larger, newer and better funded facilities in places like Baltimore or New Orleans it is a sentimental favorite of mine and we thought it would be just the right speed for Clara.

The oldest continuously operated facility of its kind, The National Aquarium has history dating back to an early incarnation based in Woods Hole, Wyoming in the late 1800s. It later moved to the Washington Monument, if you can believe it, and later still to the site of the current Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. Since 1932 the aquarium has been situated in the basement of the Commerce Building, right off of 14th street and Constitution Ave.

If you live in the area you've probably walked or driven past it a hundred times but you may never have gone inside. What you'll find there these days are large, dark low-ceilinged rooms housing small, brightly lit microcosms of various habitats and sea creatures that are found throughout the United States and its coastal regions.

As you can see - Clara was completely enamored. We've been working on teaching her the fish face (you know the one) and the aquarium was great training. She got to see alligators, turtles, piranhas, eels, anemone, coral and more.

A great start to our vacation week!
